Final Essay

The world around us is like the board game Monopoly. Players would go around the board game to try and collect income and collect as much properties as they can so other players would have to pay off rent. The rent that players pay is like how people in our society would have to pay off their bills on a monthly basis. The objective of the game is to gain as many properties as a player can and try to have the most expenses. This is often known as the successful dream that every American wants to achieve. There are many factors that create roadblocks for citizens to achieve this dream. In the book, The Rich and The Rest of Us, by Smiley Tavis and Cornel West, they discuss issues about these problems that affect our society. The problem that people are having trouble facing is the fact that jobs are disappearing in companies because it has been taken over by machines. We don’t have enough income to pay off monthly bills due to the increase in pricing. These are reasons why people have not been able to achieve successful due to those factors.

The amount of jobs that have been cut off due to machines taking over their positions is growing little by little as people don’t notice all the job cuts they have given out. Big corporations have found ways to invest into small matters that will give them more income as they take jobs opportunities away. They don’t have to pay a machine to operate as much as they would have to pay an employee to work the same job. You basically don’t want workers. You hire less, and you try to find capital equipment to replace them”’ (130). This will give citizens less chances to have a job in which they will be in poverty.  This will draw them further away from being able to successful in their life.

Since companies are taking jobs away from citizens, there will be fewer people with a stable job to pay off their bills. Having a stable income is the start to have a brighter future and become higher up in society. Since prices for everything has increase, the amount of labor income people get hasn't been changed. Smiley and Cornel mentioned, “Middle class people would disparage low-incoming people. Low-incoming people would dog the working poor, and the working poor would beat down on the homeless poor-because we all want to feel like we have some sort of stature in life” (171). Because of this issue, people have been working countless hours hoping to have for income to support their family and themselves but they work so much for the same pay they would normally get while resources that they need are slowly increasing in price. This slowly drives them away from being able to be successful in the future. The same factor applies to living costs that need to be met as they have a house to maintain. People’s income that they receive from their jobs won’t be enough to pay for their bills since price has raised so much.

The strive to live as an American has been so tough for every single citizen that they have to work hard every day to be stable and fit in with society. Their hope to one day be successful and have no worries on the next bill statement would relief them from their hard work. Smiley and Cornel stated, “The dream of equality, hope, and liberty was woven deeply into the fabric of American” (34). This is what makes up an American so that they can strive hard and one day they can hope to achieve success due to their hard work that they have shown. Citizens always want to try to get the better of them by having to go to work and get big thank you from their manager. That one thank you can determine the outcome of their future in the business and perhaps a promotion. Their motivation to have a sense of hope is what it takes them people to continue to try harder. This also means that while others are trying harder to achieve a higher position, there are people who don’t care as long as it is enough to fuel them to live. This can simply be why some people haven’t been able to get away from the poverty state. Those people are reasons why some families struggle to have a better future.

With the lack of jobs and the increased price of resources, Americans have a harder life to deal with if they want to be more successful than where they are right now. With the hope that Americans have within them, they want to succeed. This is often crushed by the fact that it will be hard for them to be successful. People would be paid the same amount as the price of costing and other materials will soar up. Even with these factors that will hold citizens back from achieving better in society; they still have the hope to one day be able to surpass others and become successful.

Low-Achieving Schools

There are many schools within the bay area that has shown no progression around the years of 2006 and onward. This is an impact that these schools have that will affect the students that attend it. With the poor amount of money that the government has seen in that district, they are able to get funds from the federal school improvement grant. This is just the start so children would have an education within their neighborhood. These schools range from Alameda all the way through as far as Los Angeles.  The lack of money is a problem to why those schools have such a low achieving performance as compared to other schools.

                This is very similar to some of the schools that were explained within salvage inequalities.  If the school doesn’t have enough supplies for their students, then the learning experience with be vastly different. The scores won’t be as high as compared to schools that have everything their students need. Textbook is one of the important things because it creates the environment of learning when the student holds that book and begin reading the pages. If a poorly funded school doesn’t have money for supplies and materials, then it will be hard for the students to have a proper education.  

                The education is the future of the world and children as well. Since schools that are shown to have low achieving scores, then it should be dealt with. Fix the problem and the school might have a higher success in their ways of education as well as in the educational level of their students. Any student should be treated fairly with education. Poverty issues can be helped with a concern government that will lend a helping hand if they don’t want to see more and more children fail from such a lowly educated school.

Federal Funds.

The lack of federal funding causes students in schools to be in an uncomfortable setting and unpleasant condition. This can be harmful to their learning education if they don’t have a good environment to study and learn in.  Kozol stated “Why should there be an elementary school within a skating rink? Why should the Board of Education allow this” (119). The quote explains a lot on how education is being funded, if they have to resort to place a classroom somewhere so remote. It is quite sad on how some children have to go to a classroom like that.

Three Reasons

-The first main reason why education is a big factor that changes our course of life is the decision making it has. If a student decides to make the environment better for others, they would have to research to a degree where a change can and will affect to environment. The other option that a student has is to wait it out until nature or someone else comes up with an idea to change the environment to be better for others. This can often get students a better job advantage when they are more upfront of their ideas and goals and takes action to pursue them.

-Another good reason why students should continue their education and not take it lightly is that it will bring out good health and a stress-free life as they reside in a good neighborhood. By having a timely mannered schedule that is planned out before the day starts is a good way to throw away stress that might come bother someone as they try to plan their day out. Also by living in a good community, it is quiet most of a time which means that sleeping at night will be more peaceful.

-With the commitment to pursue education and along the factors that were listed about having a good community and job opportunities, this can be a good outcome to have a good income and family setting. With the amount of income, the purchase of a good neighborhood near a good school would have higher chances than someone who doesn’t have these options opened.  This can be good for their future children to have access to a good community and school in which it can help to guide them to a better life.

TED Talk Sir Ken Robinson: Bring on the Learning Revolution.

I saw the Ted show about the learning revolution. What he said was very true that people with talents don't take that approach towards it. How some people don't do anything until the weekend, where they would spend the entire week just doing their job and rest on the weekends. Some people like this way of life while others are different. He also stated we should challenge yourself into things that we never have thought doing, because some people might be surprised how the feeling is while they are doing it. Since most people follow a general outline of their lives, they don't get to reach out and explore the other things out there. His idea of how wrist watch is from the generation 25 and above wears them while the youngsters that nowadays have phones to tell them the time instead of having to carry a watch. this is also seen in education everywhere. Students now have access to eBooks online and power points from teachers. some teachers still prefer to use worksheets and lectures about chapters inside a book. This was something that came up while i was watching the video.

Research Homework

The impact a person has on their passionate goal is highly maintained for most people. They have goals in which they would want to achieve by always being persistent towards that goal. In the article “On The Costs and Benefits of Gaming: The Role of Passion” it shares reasons why the gaming industry is so huge that people always have a passion to play it. It can either cause the person to show positive effects or negative effects. This relates to the passion project because professional gamers also are dedicated to their career. People around the world praise them as role models to show their supportive ways by cheering them on in championships. The Passion Project showed that it matters how people should do what they are conformable with and dedication towards that goal. Being passionate about something is very hard for most people due to friends, school, or family affairs or problems that conflict it. “A first implication is that passion matters with respect to affective gaming experiences” (Lafrenière, 288). This quote was appealing due to the expression of respect towards the gaming experience. If people never know the situation between the game and their players, the concept of which thrives them to play will be unknown. There was a similar issue that was announced in the Passion Project where someone stated that knowing their own degree with a passion takes time to acknowledge them. While others are trying to reach their goal, there will be some people who tend to drift off until they find out what they are passionate about. The article also stated a very eye-catching quote which reads, “Since people freely engage in the activity willingly with a sense of personal volition being derived from activity engagement” (285).

Factors of Disobedience

One of the common ideas when I hear disobedience would be the lack of studying. Sometimes students tend to have a mind set in a field of their favor that they know the material very well. A good example would be taking a language class in which the course is Spanish. A student can take the Spanish when their first language is Spanish, thus it implies that the course will be fairly easy for them. This can cause the student to not do as much studying when it comes to test and quizzes that the instructor offers. While other students that have to study day and night to remember the definition to certain terms, the particular student have fun on their free time when they should be studying for the course. This can cause a bad habit for the lack of studying when the student takes a different course, example math; they would need to remember the formulas for equations and how the formulas work. Instead, the habit of not studying can carry over, which can cause his grade to fall and have a tough time during the class period.

            As teenagers grow up year by year into their young adult hood, problems and roadblocks often occur the most during this time. Teens would often experience bullies within schools and start their early relationships as their puberty hits. Although many teens often spend their entire day at the school grounds, hardship is still around. They still have to obey the classroom rules and school policy during those educational hours. Once that bell rings at their last class, they would set their daily routine and go home to finish their homework, as well as watching television, eating their favorite snacks, and talking to their friends. As those teens age, their mind set will start to develop and start to have their own ideas and thoughts. They will begin to have their own decision making on where which food they would like to eat, and their own ideas on what is more important to them. “If a man can only obey and not disobey, he is a slave; if he can only disobey and not obey, he is a rebel” (685). That quote resembles of how the life of a teenager goes as they age to young adults. They first begin by obeying their parents and later learn to make their own choices in life by disobeying others and follow their own.

            The idea that education is available to us is for our future benefit. Being able to purchase good items with the income from the job we get throughout education. In order to do so, one must pass the required classes needed for the degree industry to get a diploma. With all the hard work that must be given to achieve this goal, time and management with study skill is needed. The good work on homework and test results will bring forth a grade for the class which will be recognized that the student has the required skills to pass the class. Although there are some cases where the student doesn't like the class but it is required for them to take it. “The subjects do not derive satisfaction from inflicting pain, but they often like the feeling they get from pleasing the experimenter; they are proud of doing a good job” (75). This quote refers to what a student has to go through classes not in their field of interest, but as a result of getting an outstanding grade in the class, they are satisfied. In order words, the students must obey their education while disobeying the fact that the student themselves aren't pleased with the course they need to take.

            In a classroom environment, there will always be a student who disrespects teacher and their classmates. Quite often, the teacher would ask that student for a side conversation on why they are acting that way and what might fix the problem. Other times the student would be just sent out for detention time for rude behavior during class period. The disrespect that they show in a classroom is not appealing and mood in character for other classmates. When they see that student in the hallways, most students would believe that this person is a bad child and might be a bad influence to them, thus they would avoid being near that student. Delinquent would be a word to describe them for their actions and disobedience. They would go into a classroom and do what they want without considering others within the room. They would not listen to any rules that the teacher has set within their classroom and do as they please. Some might go to sleep in class or be on their phones during the lecture period. The act of disobedience renders them to be delinquent.

            Teachers often try to ask for volunteers in a classroom environment for feedback on their teaching methods and for certain topics that the class is discussing. Students sometimes wonder if what they answer to a question that the teacher has asked is correct or not. Often students believe that their answer is wrong; it leads to few hands in the air when the teacher has asked for feedback. This is a type of fear that students have when they might know the answer but are scared to be looked upon on if it is wrong. Some students on the other hand might think it is a great way to see how much their knowledge is in that subject and answer what they believe is right. The obedience level applies both ways in this matter. One being obedient to the teacher and answer their questions while you disobey that fear inside you to raise up your hand; the other is the exact opposite whereas the student would apply their fear to keep their hand down and disobey the teacher by keeping quiet in their seat.
